In one of the closest finishes in the history of the run, Ben St Lawrence has taken out the 40th Sun-Herald City2Surf presented by Westpac, beating Michael Shelley by one second.
Ben was thrilled to cross the Bondi finish line with a time of 41.05 minutes, even faster than his run last year at 41.07.
He said: “I first ran in this race 20 odd years ago when I was eight and it’s always been a goal of mine to win the City2Surf. To be the first Sydneysider since 1994 to win is something special and this will definitely go down as a career highlight for me.”
Lara Tamsett was the women’s champion in a time of 46.54 minutes and commented: “I feel so relieved! In the lead up to the race I felt really excited but I also placed a lot of expectation on myself.”
Lara’s aunty was one of her family members watching the race today and was a winner of the City2Surf in 1997.
“My goal was to run well for all my friends and family that have been supporting me. I’m so happy to win today,” added Lara.
The 2010 runner-up for the men was last year’s winner Michael Shelley with a time of 41.06 and for the women Cassie Fien with a time of 47.51.
This year a record 80,000 entered the race, making the City2Surf the world’s largest run. Olympian and first-time City2Surf participant Grant Hackett fired the starter’s gun for the 40th race and runners left the city along a scenic 14 km course to Bondi Beach.
