Hi Eden, tell us a bit about yourself and the fundraising that you’re doing through City2Surf?

When I was in Year 2, a dear friend named Joanne passed away from Brain Cancer. While she was unwell she and her family received great care at Bear Cottage. After she passed away, I wanted to do something to remember her and to help fundraise for Bear Cottage. I took part in my first City2Surf in Year 3.

In that first year, I felt honoured because I raised over $3,793. It felt so good knowing that I was helping Bear Cottage help other families. This is my third consecutive City2Surf. I love the whole experience and knowing that I am making a difference.

I’ve invited my whole year to participate with me and some families have already started training. Everyone is really excited about doing the event together.

How many friends and family have you got running City2Surf with you this year Eden?

So far I have 25 interested families and one of the Year 6 teachers!

How much have you raised for Bear Cottage?

Including the sponsorship funds I have received so far this year, I have raised almost $8,000.

Why did you choose to do fundraising through City2Surf?

I knew I wanted to raise funds for Bear Cottage and Mum looked on the Bear Cottage website to see how they recommended doing it. Originally I was going to wash cars but then we saw the City2Surf option and thought that it looked really fun. The everydayhero page made it easier than collecting money for car washing.

You started raising funds for Bear Cottage to let Joanne’s parents know she is still fondly remembered and to help other families who find themselves in a similar position. How do Bear Cottage and Joanne’s family react after the race each year?

The first year I gave Joanne’s mum my race medals which I had engraved with the words ‘I did this for you Joanne xx’. It was a very emotional moment for us both. Joanne’s mum is always really supportive of my fundraising and proud of what I am trying to do for Bear Cottage.

Last year, I was invited to a ‘Thank You Celebration’ hosted by Westmead Children’s Hospital and Bear Cottage. I felt really special to have been included.

Do you think you’ll continue your fundraising work when you grow up?

Yes, I really like the way it makes me feel to know I am helping others.

Is there a particularly outrageous thing you’d love to attempt for fundraising one day?

To have a dinner with the sponsors and have The Greatest Showman cast come and entertain us all. I think that would be amazing!

Now for our rapid fire questions:

You’ve been granted access to any celebrity you like to help raise funds. Who would it be Eden and why?

100% I would ask for Hugh Jackman to help me! He went to my school when he was young and he seems like such a nice person. I know he would be able to help me raise so much money as he is so energetic and well liked. My favourite movie and music at the moment is The Greatest Showman I find the songs really inspiring.

If you could create your own charity event, it would be called:

‘Joanne’s Light’, which would be an amazing dinner or a walk around Centennial Park with lots of beautiful lanterns and fairy lights that light up the area.

What do you like to do after City2Surf?

Last year I went to Ballet! The year before I came home and flopped on the couch.

If you had to sing a song to raise money for Bear Cottage, which song would it be and why?

Absolutely it would be ‘This is me’ from The Greatest Showman Soundtrack. I created a video with this song to sell the idea of joining our Year 6 City2Surf team to my year group. It is such an inspiring song, it really conveys my message with so much emotion.

If you could dress up as anything or anyone and do City2Surf, what would you choose and why?

I would dress up as Bandaged Bear, because he is the mascot of Bear Cottage, but that would be very hot!
