The Sun-Herald City2Surf has today confirmed that a physical event will not be possible in 2021, with organisers progressing with a virtual run allowing participants to take on the 14km event in their own neighbourhoods.
Unfortunately, in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and current NSW Government restrictions on mass gatherings, it’s not possible for organisers to hold a physical City2Surf as hoped on Sunday 17 October 2021.
Participants are being encouraged to run on their local neighbourhood streets between Sunday 17 and Sunday 24 October as part of the City2Surf Virtual Run.
Last year more than 13,000 people from across Australia and around the world took part in the first ever City2Surf Virtual Run, with organisers looking forward to welcoming back participants and new to take on the 14km event in a COVID Safe manner.
Chris Jarvis, Regional Director of The IRONMAN Group Oceania, organisers of City2Surf, said the Virtual Run will provide a great opportunity for participants to get behind a common goal, not only training for the run but raising vital funds for charities in need.
“We had hoped that the situation in Greater Sydney would have improved enough to allow a physical event to take place this October but unfortunately it has become clear that we won’t be in a position to welcome tens of thousands of people to the event in the timeframe at hand,” said Jarvis. “While it’s disappointing that we can’t take to the streets between Sydney’s CBD and Bondi Beach it’s great that we can celebrate the magic of the City2Surf once again with a virtual run.
“We were thrilled with the support we had for last year’s inaugural City2Surf Virtual Run with more than 13,000 participants from Sydney, across Australia and 23 other countries taking part,” he said. “We can’t wait to see people get active and log their run wherever they are in the world, while also raising much needed funds for charity, with more than $600,000 raised from last year’s Virtual Run. We know that events like the City2Surf are incredibly important for our charity partners and look forward to seeing our runners surpassing last year’s fundraising total.”
The City2Surf Virtual Run will provide an opportunity for people to take part in an event in a COVID Safe manner, while also raising much needed funds for those in need.
To take part in the City2Surf Virtual Run participants register online, download a dedicated City2Surf Virtual Run app, and then walk, run, dance or skip the 14km distance wherever they are between 6am AEDT on Sunday 17 October and 6pm AEDT on Sunday 24 October 2021.
In 2021 the City2Surf will debut a new brand and website, designed to reflect the fun and excitement associated with this iconic Sydney event. With 50 years of fun behind us, the time is right to start looking towards the future and bring this event to life for the next generation of runners.
Entries for the City2Surf Virtual Run are set to open on Thursday 9 September 2021.
