The Sun-Herald City2Surf Virtual Run to hit the streets from this Sunday

Runners from across Sydney and around the world are set to run 14km in their own neighbourhoods from this Sunday for The Sun-Herald City2Surf Virtual Run.

More than 7,000 runners are expected to take part in the City2Surf Virtual Run, with 2021 being the second year that the iconic Sydney event has taken place virtually.

For 2021 the City2Surf team has extended the window for the event, with participants now able to complete their 14km run between 6am Sunday 17 October and 6pm Sunday 24 October.

The City2Surf Virtual Run has gone global once again, with runners from Australia and 18 other countries signing up. The 2021 event will have runners from countries including New Zealand, the United States, Great Britain, Singapore, China and Thailand taking part.

Central to the City2Surf has always been raising much needed funds for charity, with participants having already raised more than $290,000 this year.

Chris Jarvis, Regional Director of The IRONMAN Group Oceania, organisers of the City2Surf, said that the team was looking forward to seeing participants out achieving their running goals over the week-long event.

“We’re thrilled to have more than 7,000 people already sign up for the City2Surf Virtual Run,” said Jarvis. “While it’s a shame that we’re not able to come together again this year for the world’s largest fun run it will be great to see people celebrate the event in their own neighbourhoods.

“The City2Surf is such an important event for so many people, we’re really pleased that we’ve been able to hold the Virtual Run together again this year and can’t wait to see runners begin to log their times from 6am on Sunday morning, and throughout next week,” he said. “With COVID restrictions continuing to ease in Sydney the City2Surf Virtual Run is a great opportunity for people to get outside and run with family and friends, while adhering to current Government rules.”

To take part in the City2Surf Virtual Run participants register online, download a new dedicated City2Surf Virtual Run app, and then between 6am AEDT on Sunday 17 October and 6pm AEDT on Sunday 24 October walk, run or jog the 14km course in their local neighbourhoods. The event will conclude at 6pm on Sunday 24 October. Participants can either carry their phone while they take part or track their run using Strava or Garmin Connect and upload their data once finished.

Entry for the City2Surf Virtual Race is $39 for adults, with a donation of $5 from each adult entry going to select City2Surf charity partners, and $20 for children, with everyone receiving a finisher medal and a one-off, exclusive Virtual Run athlete gift.

When completing the City2Surf Virtual Run participants must not run along the traditional City2Surf course, including starting at Hyde Park and finishing in Bondi Park, or heading along Queen Elizabeth Drive. Participants are encouraged to run in their local neighbourhood, follow safe social distancing and observe and comply with all applicable local laws and regulations in relation to COVID-19 and public health.
