Our Story

Over the last 50 years The Sun-Herald City2Surf has transformed from a local road race into the world’s largest fun run and a bucket list event for Sydneysiders, along with thousands of participants from across the country and around the world.

Whether you walk, jog or run the famous 14km course from Hyde Park to Bondi Beach, City2Surf is all about hitting the streets and having fun with your family, friends and thousands of others while also raising an incredible amount of money for charity.

Maybe you’ve raced every year (shout out to our Legends!), or love the thrill of racing (❤️ Harry Summers❤️) or dressing up (we’re looking at you Gorillas!) ..... or maybe you want to experience the energy and excitement of City2Surf for the very first time – whatever your why, City2Surf is about YOU... doing it your way.

In 2021, City2Surf is going virtual from Sunday 17 October to Sunday 24 October 2021.

Our Course

The Sun-Herald City2Surf has one of the most iconic courses in the world. Experience the thrill of starting the 14km event in Australia's largest city in the middle of its bustling CBD before making your way to one of the world's most famous beaches - Bondi Beach.

The race starts at the intersection of Park Street and College Street before participants make their way downhill on William Street and head up through the Kings Cross tunnel.

The course continues along New South Head Road winding through Rose Bay, then up the infamous "Heartbreak Hill" - the halfway point and one of the most scenic parts of the course.

Runners then turn the corner at Vaucluse onto Old South Head Road, then Military Road and down the hill as they take in breathtaking ocean views, before completing a turnaround at Curlewis Street, and crossing the finish line on Queen Elizabeth Drive at Bondi.

In 2021, the event will be held virtually with participants taking to their local neighbourhoods to participate.

Best Selfie Spots

In 2022, make sure to remember these spots for the most picturesque selfies.

  • Rose Bay - Take a break at the 5km mark and snap a photo with Sydney's stunning harbour behind you.
  • Top of Heartbreak Hill - Capture a pic of the world's most famous bridge.
  • Ben Buckler - Bondi awaits, you're nearly finished.
  • Bondi Beach - Finish line feels. Pics or it didn't happen.

In 2021, runners are not permitted to run along the traditional City2Surf course, and cannot finish in Bondi Park or along Queen Elizabeth Drive.
