With over a quarter of a million dollars already raised by their Movement of Many, Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation (SCHF) are the 2023 City2Surf’s biggest fundraisers.

The City2Surf returns to the streets of Sydney this Sunday with over 75,000 already set to take part. Many of those will have extra motivation to complete the 14km course as they run with heart to raise money for charity.

SCHF have been involved with the City2Surf since 2008 and the event plays a vital role in raising much-needed dollars and awareness for the charity, in turn helping to give sick children the running start they deserve.

SCHF have an ambitious goal to raise $700,000 through this year’s City2Surf. Already, over 2,000 fundraisers have amassed nearly $350,000 for the charity.

The funds raised for SCHF at this year’s event will be used to help Sydney Children's Hospitals Network provide extraordinary care for children like Abigail.

In 2021, baby Abigail was rushed to Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick in a critical condition after her local hospital needed to resuscitate her. There she had an MRI on her brain which revealed Abigail was born with a condition called Hypopituitarism – meaning her pituitary gland doesn’t produce enough critical hormones like cortisol, growth hormone and thyroid hormones. Without medication, her condition can be life threatening.

But after five weeks in intensive care, Abigail returned home and is now doing incredibly well. Her mum, Adrienne says she is forever grateful for the support they received.

“The pain of doing City2Surf is nothing compared to what these sick kids can go through. So many families need help – we experienced this firsthand, and our daughter is now home and doing well because of the care we received.”

Last year, Team ‘Abigail the Brave’ – made up of Abigail, pushed along in her pram, mum, dad, nan and grandfather – conquered Heartbreak Hill and the City2Surf, raising over $7,000 for SCHF.

The team return this year as patient ambassadors for SCHF and will once again tackle the City2Surf and its iconic 14km course from the CBD to Bondi Beach. They have already raised nearly $6,000.

All funds raised for SCHF through the City2Surf go directly to helping support Sydney's world-leading paediatric hospitals and services.

Kristina Keneally, CEO of Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation, says she is thankful to all those who have fundraised so far and is excited to take part in the City2Surf alongside Team SCHF to help support sick and injured children across NSW and beyond.

“At Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation we call our supporters a Movement of Many, but at City2Surf, where we will have almost 2,000 fundraisers running, we will be Many on the Move,” said Keneally.

“As City2Surf's leading charity for the second year in a row, Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation has set an ambitious target of $700,000 to support Sydney's two world-leading paediatric hospitals at Randwick and Westmead, as well as palliative care and patient transport. The money we raise will go towards the area of greatest need, like ground-breaking research, clinical excellence or creating positive patient experiences for sick kids.

“I can’t wait to lace up my runners, put on my SCHF singlet, and join our magnificent donors, supporters and volunteers on the day,” she said.
